Team Profiles

Alan Dodwell - B.Sc. CA

Worked for sixteen years with Ernst & Young in London and Auckland - mainly in Audit and Insolvency gaining experience of a wide range of businesses. Alan emigrated to New Zealand in 1988, joining a predecessor firm of Accumulus Limited in 1994.

Alan has an interest in investments and enjoys small business accounting and taxation, particularly dealing with Trusts and business structures.

Alan's interests are playing bridge and croquet, trying to keep up with his children's travels and keeping his "life style" avocado orchard under control. Alan visits the local gym to keep healthy.

Strengths – all aspects of small business tax, orchard and farm reporting, investments, trading structures and technical issues.


Janet Lacey - NZ DipBus AT

Worked in clerical and legal positions (both in London and New Zealand) before joining the practice in 1987 and eventually becoming Office Manager.

During this time Janet has placed high importance on upskilling and has completed a New Zealand Diploma in Business Studies and attained her Accounting Technician qualification.

Growth of the business and the importance of information technology systems has also seen Janet develop her knowledge of computer systems (and she can dismantle a pc at 20 paces!). Jokes aside, she maintains our practice management and accounting software and gives knowledgeable support with other software including BankLink and Cash Manager.

Janet's very approachable manner is appreciated by many clients, especially those who find the world of Accounting a daunting one.

Janet's interests are exercising at local gym, fishing, walking Labradors and swimming.

Strengths – GST, PAYE, annual account preparation, income tax, orchard and farm reporting, software support, helping business to get started and office management.


Paul Shanks - BCom CA

After graduating B.Com with a double major in Accounting and Information Systems from the University of Otago, Paul worked in the audit division of KPMG attaining his full chartered accountancy qualification in 1992. Moving to London Paul began working in the Investment Banking industry as a management accountant at the European headquarters of a major US bank and securities house. A transfer to the corporate headquarters in New York saw Paul ultimately achieve the level of Vice President & Principal, Finance & Administration.

On returning to NZ Paul became involved in a number of occupations and business enterprises, before settling down on a property just outside Katikati, and joining the team at Accumulus. When not in the office Paul is most likely to be found on his farm-orchard tending the trees, cattle, sheep, chickens and walking or cycling with his GSP X Doogie Howser and the occasional foster dog.

Strengths – All aspects on NZ Taxation & Compliance, Financial instruments; planning, budgeting and analysis; financial and management reporting; spreadsheet and database applications. Paul is a Xero Certified Advisor.

Bev Oswald - CA

Bev is a Katikati "local" and has been a CA since 1983, running her own practice in Katikati for a number of years. Bev now provides invaluable consulting services to Accumulus two days per week. Bev has a particular interest in the building industry and the taxation issues involved in land transactions.

When not in the office Bev is a keen gym junky and tries to keep fit biking off road.

Strengths - Income tax and GST, particularly with regard to property and development.



The Team



Tracey Body
Tracey is a Katikati Local having lived here from the age of 6.  She lives on a lifestyle block and with her husband runs 3 Beef grazing blocks.

Has worked in Accountancy firms in Katikati and Tauranga since leaving school, only taking time off when her 2 daughters were young.  Started at Accumulus in November 2015.

Interest include spending time with family, playing hockey, gym, biking, fishing and reading.

Strengths – Annual Account preparation and GST


Maree Brown

Maree was born and raised on a dairy farm in Taranaki.

Maree has had a diverse career from 8 years in the Royal New Zealand Navy to balloon decorating, dairy farming and owning an avocado orchard. She has co-owned a successful IT & Electrical Engineering Company where she specialised in IT training and process automation software design. She has been working as an accountant in Katikati for over ten years.

Maree has been a Reckon (formally known as QuickBooks) trainer since 1996 and is a current Reckon Accredited Consultant. Maree is helpful with any aspects of the mysteries of computers. Maree's interests include spending time with her 3 daughters & 2 granddaughters, going to the gym and getting involved in any activity that sounds like fun – tramping, bike riding,shopping.

Strengths – GST, PAYE, income tax, computer software and day to day office management


Matthew Davis - BBus BAv CA

Matthew has recently settled in Katikati, moving here from Queenstown where he lived for 13 years working as an advisor for Crowe Horwath, Queenstown's biggest advisory firm and previously for Air New Zealand in Queenstown. Matthew initially started out in the aviation industry working for Air New Zealand in Queenstown and through this interest obtained a commercial pilots license.

Matthew has as strong skill in online accounting and the efficiencies that can be gained from its use. His particular strength is with Xero and integrating with Xero add on partners.  Matthew has a very approachable and friendly personality.

In his spare time, Matthew is active with his business interest with a skin care firm and enjoys spending time with his 2 young daughters, trout fishing, reading and having a good round of golf or Frisbee golf.




Chris Hewlett

After leaving school Chris worked for a year for the IRD in Tauranga before joining the NZ Air Force for 8 years where she spent 2 years as an electrical technician before retraining in accounting.

Chris joined a predecessor accounting firm in the early 90's and worked as a receptionist and accounts clerk for nearly 10 years. Illness forced an early retirement so she took time out to travel overseas with her husband. She re joined us in July 2010 and job shares with Carey on reception and helps out with GST processing.

Her interests include motorcycling, swimming, tramping, fishing, tennis, travelling, reading and walking their adopted dog Buddy.

Strengths – Calmly doing the many varied tasks that need doing administratively in an accounting practice. Organising the team members to participate in a variety of events both inside and outside of work hours. Always cheerful.


Carey Hume

Often Carey's cheerful face is the first one you see as you come up our stairs.

Carey was born in the South Island, but has lived in Katikati for over 20 years. Carey has an office management background with experience in both New Zealand and Australia in a wide range of industries. Her children are all  grown and independent. Carey looks after a lot of the administration that happens at Accumulus and is more than happy to help you solve any puzzles you may have.

She enjoys scrap book work and sewing and is very creative. We are often the recipients of wonderfully made little presents which we all enjoy.

Strengths – Practice management, good writing skills, Company Office returns and requirements, PAYE, Client Liaison, 'Making Things Happen'.


Renae Mohi - NZ DipBus

Renae was born in the small Central Otago town of Balclutha. Her family moved to Katikati when she was nine and have lived here ever since. Renae has completed a NZ Diploma in Business majoring in Finance and Accounting.

Renae deals with all aspects of GST, payroll, accounts preparation and tax and has grown into the role of Accumulus Xero Hero.

Renae has strong cultural and ancestral links to Katikati and the local Marae, and worked for the local Kohanga Reo for two years prior to working for Accumulus.

In her spare time Renae enjoys spending time with her partner and sons, she also enjoys playing sports and is a talented netball player.

Strengths – Annual account preparation, wages & PAYE, GST, income tax, Xero software and anything else she is ever asked to do


Sue Penny

Sue is from a rural background and is actively involved with her husband operating a five hectare avocado orchard in Apata.

Sue's first clerical job was for five years in her parent's manufacturing engineering firm in Taupo. She started her accounting career with KPMG in Tauranga while studying at the BOP Polytechnic before moving to a smaller accounting firm where she spent 20 years working with orchardists, farmers and many other small businesses.

Sue's interests are reading, gardening, spending time with her four grandchildren and is an extremely knowledgeable avocado grower.

Strengths – Preparation of annual accounts and all aspects of small business taxation and related technical issues.


Viv Proffitt

Viv has worked in accounting offices since 1978, starting as a receptionist and then moving onto preparing financial statements and tax returns and expanding her knowledge to cover anything she is asked to do. She has worked in two previous Katikati accounting practices. Viv started with Accumulus in December 2010.

She enjoys fishing, camping, tramping, sewing and dancing.

Strengths – All aspects of annual accounting preparation including: Livestock, GST and Income Tax


Lisa Robb

Lisa joined us in 2009 from a local kiwifruit packhouse. She has a partner and three children.

Lisa began her working career with National Business Review a job she thoroughly enjoyed and she still misses the excitement of being in the publishing industry.

She has settled well with us and is enjoying the challenges that are part of the work in an accountancy practice.

Strengths – Wages and PAYE, GST, annual account preparation, income tax and any other work that anyone ever gives her


Sheryl Sutton

Sheryl took a circuitous route to accountancy. After starting in picture framing she trained in office procedures and entered the hospitality industry. She has worked in all aspects of tourist hotels all round the country culminating in four years in hotel management. Having moved back to the area Sheryl joined us from a clerical job with a building supplies company in Tauranga.

Sheryl and her husband live miles up in the hills in the bush where they are self sufficient for power and water and fight a running battle against possums. Sheryl enjoys bush walking, decorating, gardening, diving, travel and therapeutic firewood chopping. Sheryl is a very creative person and has done some top notch oil paintings.

Strengths – Wages and PAYE, GST and annual accounts preparation. She is an exceptionally tidy and well organised administrator and looks after Accumulus' own payroll and accounts payable.

Melissa Western

Melissa is our latest and youngest team member and provides an invaluable service on the reception desk. Melissa has also started assisting with preparing client reports packs,preliminary GST and accounts preparation work, Accumulus' own accounts receivable and tax return processing.



Yvette Williams

After working for Accumulus and one of it's predecessor firms for a number of years, Yvette and her husband have moved to the Waikato for a better sharemilking opportunity. Yvette continues to work for Accumulus, from a distance, as and when needed.

Strengths – GST, annual account preparation, income tax, with a particular interest in farming.
